Warner Brothers Pictures has announced that they will be releasing more big studio 3D titles. This is no surprise after the huge success of Avatar. The next 3D movie to be released will be Clash of the Titans on April 2nd. The next movies that will come out in 3D will Guardians of Ga’Hoole in September, Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore in July and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1 in November.
Clash of the Titans is a remake of the original 1981 movie of the same name. The story is about Perseus who was born of a god, but raised as a man. Perseus family is murdered by Hades and this causes him to go on a vengeful crusade to unleash hell on earth. After watching the previews, this movie looks amazing. I can’t wait to see this in 3D. I have a feeling this will do really well and more people will opt to see the movie in 3D versus 2D.
Guardians of Ga’Hoole is a movie adaptation of a very popular children’s book. The book is a story of a young barn owl named Soren. He is kidnapped by a group of owls from St. Aggie’s, an orphanage where owlets are brainwashed and turned into soldiers. Soren then escapes to the island of Ga’Hoole, where he assists wise owls who battle the wicked owls of St. Aggie’s. I have not heard much buzz about this movie, but if it has a big enough children’s fan base, it could do really well.
Cats & Dogs: Revenge of Kitty Galore is the sequel to the 2001 movie Cats & Dogs. In this sequel, the cats and dogs have to put their war on hold to do battle with a rogue cat spy. This cat spy has sinister plans of her own. I enjoyed the first installment 9 years ago, but I am not sure about how succesful this movie will be in 3D. If there are no other children’s movies released around the same time, then this one could do well.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1 is the first part of the final installment of the Harry Potter series. Not much more needs to be said about this humongous film franchise. This one will definitely do well. The only question is, Will this do better than all the previous movies? If it does, it will be a huge thumbs up for 3D movies.
The release of big studio 3D movies will definitely help fuel the hunger for 3D TVs. Many people who fall in love with the movie in the theter will want to take that experience home. I would expect all special effects intensive movies to be released in 3D, which should in turn increase the number of 3D movies released on 3D BluRay.
These releases may effect the future of 3D movies. Some think that the success of Avatar was not related to the 3D experience but to the hype surrounding the movie. If these next movies do not do well in their 3D formats, then expect studios to rethink their 3D strategies.
